BLOGGING STANDARDS AND STYLE GUIDE

These guidelines apply to the public blog created on behalf of the NYC Real Estate Investment Cooperative (REIC) website.

The goal of this guide is to:

Ensure a consistent message and demonstrate a clear and unified organizational vision that reaches members, media, and community, and any other constituent or stakeholder interested in NYC REIC’s mission

These standards can be applied to other communication channels including but not limited to: the NYC REIC website, newsletter, social media accounts, press releases, interviews given to the media.

I.   WHO SHOULD BE POSTING

All blog posts should be written by an NYC REIC work group member and clearly represent the views of the author and NOT the REIC in general.

II.   HOW DO I POST?

For now, send your post with links, pictures etc to:

nyc-reic-arts-and-media-list@googlegroups.com

III.    ART AND MEDIA WILL

  1. Solicit “approved bloggers” from each work group who will rotate every 3 months to keep things fresh and not overburden people.
    • These bloggers may include those reporting about the newsletter, who will in any event post their weekly update for their groups.
  2. Maintain a running list of story tips and ideas that writers can draw from.
  3. Copy-edit posts and do a basic review for offensive/inappropriate content.

IV.   WHAT IS THE FULL REVIEW AND APPROVAL PROCESS

  1. Art and Media Workgroup member(s) will review and edit the post primarily for style and grammar, and for relevance to REIC as per the content guidelines BELOW.
    • The Art and Media Workgroup will also tag the post appropriately so that it is properly categorized on the blog for search and archival purposes. This review will take place within 24 hours of the post.
  2. If something is posted that is then flagged by a member of REIC as offensive:
    • The post will be taken down while it is brought to the entire Art and Media workgroup for review.
    • If approved by the Art and Media workgroup, the post will be pushed to a member of the Interim Facilitation Team who will do a review within 24 hours of the original post.
    • If approved by the Interim Facilitation Team, the post will be re-published and credited to the author.

V.  VOICE AND STYLE:

Engage your reader! The voice of the post should be:

  • Lively, and not dry
  • Intelligent, but not academic
  • Bold, but not glib
  • Anecdotal, but not breezy
  • Personal, but not narcissistic
  • Visual! Add imagery, if possible

Length: There is no ideal length for a blog post, but a short blog post should be in the range of 200-400 words. A medium-sized post should range between 500-800 words. Studies have shown that longer reads (1,500 to 2,000 words) do better on search engines, so we’re not discouraging them. Be advised that a longer read may take longer than 24-48 hours to review.

VI.     WHAT SHOULD BE POSTED

The content we look for includes:

  • ANNOUNCEMENTS OF UPCOMING MEETINGS
  • Current or past work done by REIC workgroups
  • Information about the REIC and its events
  • Call to action endorsed by the Interim Facilitation Team by/for the REIC
  • Repost of press about the REIC
  • Details on upcoming meetings of work groups
  • Articles regarding other cooperative projects
  • A job posting if it supports our work, i.e. is for coops, affordable space, or research that is related to REIC ideas, as having members in such positions would be potentially helpful to REIC

VII.    WHAT SHOULD NOT BE POSTED

The following types of posts are not appropriate to the NYC REIC blog:

  • Events run by other organizations (we will get WAY too many requests for this)
  • Call to action for a related organization (we will get WAY too many requests for this)
  • Job postings unrelated to our work
