REIC U Update
Thursday, Dec. 15! REIC U Film screening/discussion and potluck dinner at Union Docs!

We will be screening Kelly Anderson’s 2012 documentary, “My Brooklyn,” the story of her journey to understand the forces reshaping her neighborhood along lines of race and class. It raises questions of how we can heal the deep racial wounds embedded in our urban development patterns, and how we can become active in fixing a broken city planning process. We will hold breakout discussions after the film to discuss its themes and their applications to our work to find and secure affordable commercial space in New York City.

And consider giving a donation of $5 at the door (though we encourage more!) so we can cover the costs of our host, UnionDocs, and the filmmaker for their work and generosity.

In the wake of the 2016 presidential election, many Americans have been asking, “What can I do now?” The goal of Forward Union is to provide practical, action-based resources to help concerned citizens begin to answer this question in meaningful ways. Forward Union Fair will gather under one roof a coalition of causes: representatives from NGOs, nonprofits, political, and community organizations that are working to lift up and to protect the people, places, and values under threat. This free, public event will connect motivated individuals seeking an outlet with the hard-working groups that need their participation and support. Forward Union Fair believes we can amplify our power by showing up for each other.
Forward Union Fair will take place in an empty, ground floor retail space on Broadway, just south of Astor Place. Fair organizers will provide space and administrative support so that participating groups can share their values and spread their calls to action. Artists and curatorial collectives will also have the opportunity to present new concepts or performances inspired by the current political climate.
Talks and performances will be scheduled throughout the day.
NYC REIC will have a table there. Come visit, especially if you have been trying to figure out how to get more involved in our work – or you’ve been wanting to join as a member!

Steering Committee Update
We are incorporated! The NY State Department of State has accepted the certificate of incorporation for our Not-For-Profit Corporation that houses our cooperative. We are almost done with our bylaws, which will govern the operations of the Not-For-Profit Corporation, and are very close to finished with our letter to the NY State Real Estate Finance Bureau, which will allow us to start raising capital for our first project(s). Many thanks to James, Jannon, Sean and Paula at Fordham’s Community Economic Development Clinic for all their hard work in getting us to this point.
The next steps include finalizing the letter to send to the NY State Real Estate Finance Bureau, adopting our finalized bylaws at the next All-Member Meeting!, registering with the New York State Charities’ Bureau and filing for our tax-exempt status (rest assured, we currently receive tax exempt charitable treatment through an agreement with our fiscal sponsor, Spaceworks NYC).
In spring 2017, we will shift gears and focus on building the limited liability company (LLC) that will invest in projects for us (we are currently in talks with some potential existing project collaborations), and a framework to guide how we approach the communities and the proponents of future projects! Join us!

Art & Media Update
We are working with Roy Rub and Seth Labenz of Topos Graphics (thank you so much! for doing this pro bono for the REIC!) on a new graphic identity for the REIC. Some alternative versions will be ready very soon for review – and for you to let us know what you think!
We will be featured in the Laura Flanders Show, and they have shared hours of footage with us, from our past All-Member meeting. If you have the time and energy to select clips that you feel are most important, please email carolinewoolard@gmail.com

CORB: Community Outreach & Relationship Building Update
The former PBIG: Public Buildings Inventory Group seeks new members with great community organizing skills. We are looking for those who can help us build our community engagement model and educate the membership in best practices in how to reach out to communities and work together with them, in a horizontal, democratic, grassroots way.
We are also looking for members who can help with translation, where necessary – whether from Spanish, Chinese, Russian, or other languages.

Grievance Committee Update
As REIC plans for extensive membership growth, we are preparing for the eventuality of interpersonal conflicts and conflicts of interest. The Grievance Committee is applying to be a client of the Harvard Mediation and Negotiation Clinic Program for the Spring 2017 semester. If selected, a team of law students will recommend a design for the REIC dispute resolution system.
We are seeking volunteers to manage the relationship between the students and REIC members. Please reach out to grievance@nycreic.com to sign up.
